What To Do for Your Lawn in January
You rang in new year, put away the Christmas decorations and you are settling back into normal when you notice your lawn does not look quite as good as you remember it. There seems to be more brown leaves than green leaves and the weeds just seem bigger and uglier this time of the year. Well, that is normal for this time of the year – what I call the winter blahs.
The Lawn is Semi-Dormant
This time of the year your lawn is semi-dormant – green but not growing. Since the lawn is semi-dormant it is not producing new leaves – as older leaves die off there seems to be more brown leaves than green. And those weeds – they are not dormant – they are in their peak growing season.
What to Do?
Although your lawn is semi-dormant, it is not dead and still needs water and nutrients. Barefoot’s winter program will keep the fertility medium to medium high. We also will be applying herbicides to reduce the weed count. You add the water. Note: although it is cooler, your lawn still needs water. Continue to water your normal schedule – as much as law permits and then some.
Other Things to Do
Now is a good time to fix and repair the irrigation yourself or find a technician during the off season. Keep the mowing height as tall as possible. A tall canopy provides an insulating blanket preventing cold damage to stems and roots.
